IPL Mega Auctions were full of surprises, an absolute thrill ride for fans with different emotions over the two days as franchises looked to rebuild their core from scratch. Some players were bought for an over price as per the fans but here we list 6 overseas players that even the majority of rival fans cannot deny were an absolute steal of a deal.
- 6. Lungi Ngidi (50 Lakhs – Delhi Capitals)
Delhi Capitals tried their best to maintain the Rabada-Nortje partnership. But the price just inflated too much for them to afford him as he went to Punjab Kings for 9.25 Crores. But the new South African duo of Nortje-Ngidi can do them wonders as well with the raw pace and variation combo from both these players respectively. Ngidi was pivotal for CSK’s success of IPL title in 2018 but injuries have been a regular feature for him and have cut short his IPL career. But if his demons are past him then for statistics he still has 25 wickets in 14 innings with an impressive Strike rate of just 12.96 in his IPL career. DC have got a Rabada replacement for a whooping difference of 8.75 Crores which has also helped them in sealing deals of Marquee stars like David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Shardul Thakur.
- Alex Hales (1.50 Crores – Kolkata Knight Riders)
A reputation of T20 specialist, Alex Hales is back in the IPL after 4 long years. He was unsold the 1st time he got under the hammer but KKR bought the English Opener 2nd time for base price. An impressive Globetrotter, Hales likes to torment opposition bowling attack from Ball 1. In Big Bash League, the opener has scored 1857 runs at a gargantuan Strike Rate of 151.34 in 60 innings while 770 runs Pakistan Super League at yet another impressive SR of 148. Two different conditions in Pakistan and Australia but Hales has proven himself at both. KKR fans must be hoping Hales repeats the heroics up the order that once were done by Australian opener Chris Lynn.
- Devon Conway (1 crore – Chennai Super Kings)
A like for like replacement of Faf Du Plessis in terms of temperament, Devon Conway in his short career for New Zealand has picked the eye sight of everyone with some brilliant performances especially in Test format. But just hear his T20I stats – 50.17 average, 139.35 Strike Rate in 17 innings with 4 half centuries. Aren’t you impressed yet ? Pairing up with Ruturaj Gaikwad top of the order and maintaining the right-left combo at start can prove key for CSK to neutralize threat of swing bowlers. CSK fans were gutted as Faf bid farewell to them for RCB but this prospect right here has the ability to neutralize the void and is a much younger than him (30 years), meaning he can serve CSK for a considerable amount of time.
- Jason Roy (2 crores – Gujarat Titans)
A Strike Rate of 143.45 in T20I’s Jason Roy’s mantra as an opener is simple – Go Big or Get Lost. He has a flamboyance in his game and looks to take the game away from opposition in Powerplay overs only and getting him for base price is a fantastic deal for Titans. He has been pivotal for England in the Limited overs setup and has ignited their run chases from Ball 1. If that’s not enough, he just made a 49 ball ton in Pakistan Super League on February 7th and while chasing 205 as his team won with 3 balls to spare, Roy made 116(57) against the likes of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Rashid Khan. Titans will look to dominate the game from the early go with Jason Roy as their spearhead of opening.
- Pat Cummins (7.25 Crores – Kolkata Knight Riders)
Releasing their star player at 15.5 crores and buying him back in the mega auctions for 7.25 crores, impressive eh ? Patrick Cummins is even better of a package this year than he was last year. Australian Test Team Captain who just guided his National Team to 4-0 Ashes victory has now the reputation of assisting his captain (probably Shreyas Iyer) in crunch situations, add those wonderful unforgettable 4 sixes in an over twice, once against both Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Curran he will look to give KKR that 15-20 run advantage in slog overs. The obvious top notch bowling of the No.1 Test bowler in the World who will look to find his mojo in shortest format as well though his IPL economy of 8.24 is bad only by his standards considering he used to bowl at death for KKR with Russel and Narine.
1.David Warner (6.25 Crores – Delhi Capitals)
Perhaps the greatest steal of the IPL auction 2022, an ambassador of IPL over the years. One of the all time great IPL Batsman, you can google any IPL batsmen records and you will find Warner in majority of them. Average of 41, Strike Rate of almost 140 in IPL Career, holder of Orange Cap thrice, Man of The Tournament in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. David Warner sits at the summit when we talk about the most consistent IPL performer over the years. The Shaw-Warner duo at opening has all the capability in this world to fuse even the most reputed bowling attacks, but will they ? Only time will tell.
